Himalayan and Persian Cat Grooming: A Simple Routine
A few minutes most days is all it takes. The simple brushing and eye-care routine we teach every family who adopts from us.
By Sean Donovan, Himalayan and Persian breeder in Waterford, VA since 1995
- Brush a few minutes most days with a wide-tooth comb and a soft brush.
- Wipe around the eyes daily with a soft damp cloth.
- Start young: our kittens are brushed from the first week, so they enjoy it.
- Regular brushing prevents mats, cuts down shedding and reduces hairballs.
The long coat is the one real commitment that comes with a Himalayan or Persian. The good news: a short, regular routine is far easier than an occasional battle with mats. Here is exactly what we do.
What you need
- A wide-tooth metal comb
- A soft slicker or pin brush
- A soft cloth or cotton pads for the eyes
- Round-tipped scissors or a groomer, for the occasional trim
- Treats, for making it a good experience
The daily routine (5 minutes)
1. Comb through
Work the wide-tooth comb gently through the coat in sections, starting at the back and sides. Go slowly behind the ears, under the legs and on the belly, where mats form first.
2. Brush
Follow with the soft brush to lift loose undercoat and smooth the coat.
3. Eyes
Flat-faced breeds can get tear staining. Wipe gently around each eye with a soft damp cloth. Thick, coloured discharge, squinting or a red eye needs a vet visit.
4. Reward
Finish with a treat or a play session so grooming stays something your cat looks forward to.
Preventing mats
Mats start small and tighten quickly, especially in the armpits, behind the ears and on the hindquarters. Daily combing catches them while they are still loose. Never pull at a tight mat or cut close to the skin; ask your vet or a groomer.
Hairballs
Long-haired cats swallow more hair when they groom themselves. The best prevention is simply brushing out the loose hair first. If hairballs are frequent, ask your vet about a hairball-control food or remedy.
Baths and trims
Most Himalayans and Persians do not need frequent baths if they are brushed regularly. Some owners book an occasional bath or a tidy trim with a professional groomer, particularly in summer.
Start young
Every Friendly Kittens kitten is brushed and handled from its first week, so it goes home already used to grooming. We will show you how we do it before you leave. More questions? See our FAQ.
