Are Himalayan and Persian Cats Hypoallergenic?
The honest answer on allergies and long-haired cats, and what to do if someone in your household is sensitive.

We would rather give you an honest answer than a sale: Himalayans and Persians are not hypoallergenic. But allergies vary a lot from person to person, and some families with mild sensitivities do live happily with them.
What actually causes cat allergies
Most cat allergies are triggered by proteins found in a cat’s saliva and skin. When a cat grooms, those proteins end up on its coat, then on shed hair and dander around the house. Hair length itself is not the cause, but a long coat that sheds can spread more of it.
Tips if someone is mildly allergic
- Spend time with the kittens before you decide
- Brush your cat most days, ideally by someone who is not allergic
- Keep the cat out of the bedroom
- Use a HEPA air purifier and vacuum often
- Wash bedding and throws regularly
- Talk to your doctor about managing symptoms
