- Many Himalayans and Persians live well into their teens.
- Good genetics, including PKD-negative parents, is the foundation.
- Indoor life, a healthy weight, daily brushing and yearly vet visits all help.
- Senior cats benefit from twice-yearly checkups.
A Himalayan or Persian is a long commitment, and a happy one. With good care many live well into their teens. Here is what makes the biggest difference.
Start with good genetics
Health-tested parents give your kitten the best start. Our kittens are PKD negative, from a feline leukemia negative colony and guaranteed free of genetic defects.
Keep them indoors
Indoor cats are protected from traffic, predators and disease, and a long coat stays clean and mat-free indoors.
A healthy weight
Himalayans and Persians are calm cats, so it is easy for them to put on weight. Measure meals, use play to keep them moving, and ask your vet about their ideal weight.
Daily care
- Brush most days to prevent mats and hairballs
- Wipe around the eyes
- Keep fresh water available
- Scoop the litter box daily, so you notice any changes
Regular vet visits
A yearly checkup for adult cats, and twice a year for seniors, catches problems early. Watch for changes in drinking, appetite, weight, litter habits or energy, and call your vet if you notice any.
Caring for a senior cat
- Soft, easy-to-reach beds
- A low-sided litter box
- Gentle grooming, as older cats groom less themselves
- Regular dental and kidney checks with your vet
